AMD Ryzen 9000X3D Chips to Launch on November 7

AMD has officially announced that it will launch the Ryzen 9000X3D series on November 7, 2024. These new chips are the highly anticipated successors to the Ryzen 7000X3D series, which gained popularity with models like the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Ryzen 9 7900X3D, and Ryzen 9 7950X3D.

Key Features:

  • 3D V-cache Technology: Similar to the previous generation, the Ryzen 9000X3D chips will feature 3D V-cache technology, which adds an extra layer of L3 cache. This technology significantly enhances gaming performance, making it a standout feature for gamers.
  • AM5 Architecture: The chips will be built on the AM5 architecture, aligning with the rest of the Ryzen 9000 series but with a focus on improved gaming performance due to the additional cache.

Early Launch and Market Context:

Interestingly, AMD is launching the 9000X3D series just three months after the release of the standard Ryzen 9000 series in August, compared to the five-month gap seen with the 7000X3D chips. This could be a response to the underwhelming sales and public reception of the Ryzen 9000 series, which offered only minor improvements in performance over its predecessors.

This move also comes shortly after Intel announced its next generation of desktop processors. While Intel admitted that its new processors wouldn’t offer groundbreaking performance leaps, the company’s transparency was received positively, contrasting with AMD’s struggles after the 9000 series launch.

Expectations and Performance:

Rumors suggest that the 8-core Ryzen 9 9800X3D may be the first to launch, even though the 7800X3D was delayed by a month in the previous generation. The higher-end Ryzen 9 9900X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D are also expected to feature 3D V-cache on both CCDs, which would be an improvement over the dual CCD models from the 7000X3D series, where only one CCD had V-cache.

Leaks from MSI indicate that while productivity performance will remain similar to non-X3D variants, gaming performance will see a significant boost. However, the leap in gaming performance over the 7000X3D series might not be substantial, leaving questions about whether this will be enough to rejuvenate AMD’s standing in the market.

As the launch approaches, all eyes will be on AMD to see if the 9000X3D series can turn things around after a somewhat rocky reception to the Ryzen 9000 lineup.
